#109 AMY DURY

Step inside the world of Amy Dury, where vintage family photos and old home movies are reimagined into bold, off-kilter figurative paintings. In this conversation with Nicholas, Amy shares how she trusts her instincts to choose imagery, leans into unexpected color, and intentionally builds in those “bumps in the road” that make her work so captivating.
At the crossroads of a sabbatical, Amy opens up about what’s next: scaling up, taking risks, and digging even deeper into the stories that connect us all. Definitely worth a watch.

Thank you for such a wonderful interview Nicholas and Amy.
Nick, you are a great interviewer and you always engage so wonderfully with your guests. It is certainly a reminder to all of us that there are so many things to explore. I feel so fortunate to be a part of the Academy and to have the exposure to all of these wonderful artists! 👏😎💜
Thank you Amy and Nicholas, I really enjoyed this interview. “Trust your choosing mechanisms”. And so grateful Amy spoke to being inspired by all artists .. it keeps the conversation .. the perspective open, generous and we all get to choose to grow. Love this.
Great conversation! I love that she displays another artwork for inspiration. I saw the Wayne Thiebaud: Art Comes from Art show a couple of weeks ago, and he was all about that. The works were still uniquely his, but he firmly believed that we were never without the inspiration and ideas that came before.
Wonderful interview, very inspiring and loved learning about Amy’s process and practise and her approach to her art and growth as an artist.
Amongst all of the things there are to love about this artist’s work, I love her brushstrokes
I love the passion Amy brings 2 each portrait, through her values! I was raised in the 70’s and I remember the hairdo and styles and my mom kept old family photos that I still have. Thx for the reminiscing Amy!!
Nick, you are such a poet with your words, as good as you are with paint on your brushes. This was a terrific interview. Very happy to get to know Amy’s work & to see her inspiration from old photographs & films. Who knew the library was a source of vintage home movies?
I loved this interview! So inspiring. I’ve been using old family photos as references and I appreciate Amy’s approach of looseness and play in her work. I will definitely take that back to my studio
I Loved this, especially hearing about her approach to design and color was so new for me.
Wow, fabulous interview getting to know Amy, her processes and her works. I am so inspired, as a figurative/portrait artist, I have been seeking to find my direction. This interview reminds me of my word of last year, EXPLORE! Just keep trying new things and follow my curiosity. So much good stuff in this one. Thank you Nick and Amy!
My main take aways from this wonderful interview was to explore explore explore and try anything that you are curious about. Don’t feel guilty about being inspired by famous artists and incorporate some of their techniques and ideas into our own unique work.
