#108 ONE-ON-ONE WITH LAURA LLOYD-HENRY

Sep 17, 2025

Join Coach Kate Rhodes as she works with artist Laura Lloyd-Henry, whose background in architecture and graphic design shows up in her love of squares, lines, grids, and bold color. Laura’s ready to push her work further, to strengthen composition, add more impactful marks, expand her color range, and move beyond the point where paintings stall before reaching their full potential to that final wow factor. Kate will help her explore what’s next, including how to scale up and strengthen her true voice. If you want to add more punch in your work, you’ll walk away with fresh ideas to try in your own studio.

  3. This was an amazing conversation. Congratulations to Laura on the art and also for explaining her challenges in such an eloquent manner.
Kate, this was as valuable as the whole 12 weeks of CVP for me. I understood some of the concepts better by the examples you used and the “to do” list for Laura is now in my journal as specific tasks. You had so many interesting ideas which I hope will progress my work to a new (hopefully better) level. I will also go back in the Academy archive to find more of your Critiques or Inspiration interviews.
Thanks for being a wonderful coach in CVP and the Academy.

  5. Joan I am really pleased that Laura and my conversation resonated with your own situation – all you designers really have on a strong foothold to leap off. And if you share your work in the Academy it will be even easier to say yes when a venue option comes up.

Such great flow between you both.
      Thank you.
Kate – You mention the interview with Karen Stamper. I’ve tried to access this but can’t. Can someone in Art2Life take a look?
After seeing her exhibition in The And Gallery, Edinburgh, I’d so love to learn more.
      Thanks

  6. Such a wealth of ideas bouncing between you. A wonderfully productive and inspiring conversation. I will look back to see what artists I enjoy and observe and explore the “,why” aspect of that enjoyment and play that forward. Laura you are on the brink! Go forth!!
Kate your investment in Laura will, I am sure, be invaluable and fruitful.

  7. Laura – thank you for sharing your beautiful work. Kate, you are amazing. Your suggestions were rich, really clear and very helpful to me. I learned a great deal as I was wanting to scale up to 18×18 as well, and was first was planning to venture into masking off large sheets of paper to play before I do increase size. So many good tips and great reminders. Love your suggestion of mixing the hard edge of Laura’s geometric shapes with more organic marks. Also the addition of some neutrals and why a colorful painting can be seen as one, only with 20% bright colors. Lots to think about and explore now. Can’t wait to start tomorrow. Thank you!

  10. Kate, Joan McGibben here. This has been an inspirational interview with Laura Lloyd Henry. It has touched a real personal chord with me because my background has and continues to be with Interior Design and Landscape Design. I have always loved the integration of the natural landscape with architecture (FLW’s Falling Water a perfect example of that.) I love Laura’s work and understand her design influence. Beautiful work and can’t wait to see the scaling up that will happen. I have just gessoed 5 18″ x 18″ panels for a new series which will be Architecture in Nature (or Landscape disrupted.) I have never shown my work but, Laura, you have given me courage. Thank You both!
