#94 JOHN BUTTON

May 8, 2024

Fresh, accessible, and friendly are feelings that come to mind when viewing the paintings by John Button. It’s no surprise that these words describe his character as well. There’s an ease, humility, and authenticity in how John describes his work and the life he’s built around it. A transplant from a coastal English town to Stockholm, Sweden, his work reflects his love of the scenery, past and present. It’s within him and has shaped who he is and the art he creates. He creates for himself first, and painting is his calling.

  2. I’ve come to watch this quite late but it’s a delightful interview with a good review of the process (isn’t that why we’re all here?). Thank you, Anne and John. The paintings are as you said, fresh and I love his remark about not filling in all the shape — and he does it so well!

  3. I also watched this video 2x – for John’s talking about his relationship to shapes and for Anns great questions. QUESTION: wouldn’t it be great if there was a calendar on A2L of upcoming exhibitions of students, guest artists, coaches and of course Nick? We could visit and stay in our community too.

  6. This is was inspirational for me, I’ve watched/listened twice. I always love Ann’s interviews, identifying with so many of her’s and John’s comments about empty vessels and the feeling of possibility. I’ve painted a lot of stage sets in a past life, I never drawer the figure in my work and the feeling of that moment being frozen in time has often felt uncomfortable. Thank you both for different perceptions of energy and story.

  7. Thank you, Ann, for this inspiring interview. I appreciate John’s art. It looks simple and I should be able to paint something like that but only when you go to paint it, does it seem more complex! There’s a big difference between simple and childlike, isn’t there? I find when I paint vessels, I can’t get them wonky enough. However, I will persist. Thank you A2L for brining these interviews to the masses. It certainly helps us and helps the artists gain more of a following. Fantastic and great job, Ann!

  10. Gosh I enjoyed this interview….Ann, you are so warm and inviting as an interviewer. I’m a new fan of John’s. I too struggle with letting go of horizon lines…they seem to creep into everything….this was great to paint to…such a relaxing, inspiring interview.
