#114 CRITIQUE – ONE-ON-ONE with JASON HANSON

Mar 18, 2026

In this one-on-one critique, Nadine Johnson works with artist Jason Hanson, offering grounded feedback and a big-picture lens on his work. Through thoughtful questions and reflection, they explore how Jason’s intentions are coming through, where the work feels alive and full, and how to navigate the stories we carry about what might be “too much.” Perfect for anyone questioning their work and what it’s asking of them next.

  2. This was a wonderful dialogue between two artists. I was pulled in from the moment the conversation started. Jason, your work is so exciting. There is so much eye candy in the paint that allows the viewer to wander around and stop and pause when the moment commends it. It is as if you are a conductor standing in front of the viewers, (your own personal orchestra!) and showing us what is out there without telling us how to interpret it. You leave that up to us. I am also so moved by your humility and your openness to the comments and words of another artist. That is truly a gift. Nadine…. What can I say? The way you wove the discussion was unbelievable. I was holding on to every word and was really absorbing your observations between what was on the canvas and what you saw in Jason’s exterior world. You did this so eloquently when you kept bringing in those photographs. It was so obvious to you how all those factors influenced his work! That was a fantastic thought process. Amazing Nadine! I really appreciated this conversation. As I said, it was a fabulous dialogue between two artists. And was lucky to be able to eavesdrop. Thank you to you both!

  4. Jason, beautiful work!! I love your spheres and rich and playful texture. I feel like there are so many things to be excited about in your pieces shared, and yet,, you do direct the viewer by pushing back sub stories with the transparent layers /glazing and shapes. I really loved so many! Thanks for sharing your work, experience and all of it! and Nadine -..That was awesome, the way connections became clear to you… thats only through experience and sincere curiosity. so cool. I really enjoyed this one. Thank you all.

  9. That was a very meaningful critique, Nadine. And Jason, I think she made one major move on only one piece. That must be a record. Your work is fantastic. I love the complexity, the layers, the way you scape back to reveal what is underneath (how do you do that??). The focus created by the size of your major shapes is so appealing as are your textures, marks, scratches & collage pieces. My faves were Almost Gone, Spirits of the Earth, Blood Moon & Range. The playful ones from your time in Costa Rica were lovely & joyful. I guess you found that artist retreat you were requesting some months ago. I’m gonna follow you on instagram. Bravo!
