#111 MASTER CLASS — NAVIGATING THE MESSY MIDDLE

Nov 5, 2025

The messy middle isn’t just a hurdle to get past, it’s something every artist faces, including us. In this Master Class, Nicholas Wilton and the Art2Life Caoching team share how they personally work with this in-between stage, where clarity feels out of reach but breakthroughs are waiting. Through stories, practices, and honest conversation, you’ll see the real ways artists move through the fog with more trust and less fear, and how you can too.

  1. So helpful to hear what helps take you out of the messy middle but the biggest takeaway is you have to feel good to paint good – thanks Nick for sharing this vulnerability! Another way to get out of the messy middle is to play these recordings while you paint!

  3. Happy new year all ! What a great thing to listen to as we embark upon the new year. It was a great conversation between the four of you and I thank you for sharing your wisdom, your insights, your observations and your “messy middles.”

Thank you for all you do and all you share. I wish each of you and your families a healthy, happy, joyful, and creative new year.

    Warmest regards, Shari

  4. One of my favorites so far. The honesty, the vulnerabilities. I’ve watched this over and over just because it is so comforting to listen to this kind of topic and conversation. It’s almost more valuable to me to hear the struggles and frustrations of others. It just normalizes the process and journey for us, at least for me. Thank you. Really valuable.

  6. Thank you so much to all you coaches for such an interesting analysis of the ‘messy middle’.
I guess it’s a bit like a writer trying to write a story or as Nick said, the desire to dance, the anticipation and doubt, then the bravery and enjoyment in giving it a go!
Despite everyone of us making our own unique art, as humans, we seem to experience a similar process as we weave our way through creating something that hopefully, in the end, will be something that we love ot feel proud of.
Thank you again. It’s great to have these questions to guide us through the process aswell as all the Art2life principles!

  7. I never respected the messy middle the way I do now. Thank you for shedding light on the MM that caused me to see that it is a VITAL point in our art. A time to change directions so that we can see the way to go. Like in life.
We PLAY our way up through the preteen stage. Then the teenage to young adult phase of our lives begins. It can get real messy! But eventually, we feel something pull us to change course, (boredom, maturity). One can ignore it, fight it and get frustrated and or tired, (rebellion and angst), or get curious, ask questions, and begin trying different things, (take chances, learn). Things will suddenly become clearer and we are soon on our way to the finish line. (wisdom, clearer outlook/life plan).
It’s natural and there’s no avoiding it. Embracing it will take some maturity on my part because I feel most alive in the PLAY stage. Maybe deep down I just don’t want to grow up.
