CRITIQUE #90 – ACADEMY MASTERMIND

Mar 20, 2024

In this critique, four of our Academy members will join Ann for an intimate discussion of their work. This is a chance for these artists to connect by sharing their perspectives while giving and receiving feedback on each other’s work. These lively chats always offer insights and ideas that we can apply to our own work. We hope you’ll join us!

  1. I value the comment made at the 17 minute mark, where the speaker was saying we must be careful when applying the principles, so as not to change the essence of the original intent. I find that very helpful. Thank you!

    • Hi Kathryn, Apologies for the delay. Notan is a Japanese term that means “light-dark harmony” so when we convert our work to b/w with the most extreme contrasts they appear as a Notan would. It helps to evaluate a design by removing subtle values and seeing just the loud conversation.

  6. Ann, would you have the name of the author of Broken Open? It seems there are several in a collection. Thank you!

    • Sorry for the delay Gilane, and maybe you saw the book in the interview Nick did with me but… Elizabeth Lesser is the author. Careful it may cause a stir!

  8. I can’t access the PDF. The link takes me to a blank page at Google. Shouldn’t there be a direct link to the PDF in the Academy web site?

    • Notan. It’s an app that shows it in pure black and white. Look in the App Store.

  10. Hi academy. I just finished watching this and it was wonderful to see everyone’s paintings. There’s a million ways to paint and these are all wonderful.
There was an overall theme I think worth visiting in the academy in the future.
We all have done a deep dive on the a2l principles and listening to these painters you can hear they have a good understanding of them. But most of us are in a place where we want to hone and level up.
So a more in depth ongoing discussion about implementation of the principles.
Basically how to be more discerning when using the principal, for this group.
I’ve heard some things here and there but I think we could put a focus on this that would be helpful.
    Just a thought..,
