ART CRITIQUE #26 KAREN STAMPER

Sep 21, 2018

STRENGTHENING DESIGN, WHEN EVERYTHING ELSE IS WORKING (Suggested for Stage Three; Learning)

In this month’s Art Critique, Karen Stamper was wanting her paintings to feel bigger, but with a tendency to get hung up on certain areas, her paintings were feeling small instead. Listen in on how Nick guides Karen to scale up her thinking in order to scale up the feeling in her paintings.

In this video you will learn:

  • Furthering yourself from the piece—literally and figuratively—will improve the work.
  • Viewing and editing your work at a very small size can provide great perspective and insight.
  • Stay in the mode of change. Be willing to change.
  • Don’t be seduced by certain areas. Look at the whole painting, as every part is connected to the whole.
  • Reduce some areas, enlarge others to help the composition and make it more exciting.
  • If things are feeling complicated, be ruthless about editing, then refine what is left.
