#116 MASTER CLASS — LAYERS OF HISTORY, PAPER AND PAINT

In this richly layered Master Class, Coach Amy Livezey takes you inside her studio for a start-to-finish collage demonstration that will change the way you think about what belongs in a painting. Amy shows how vintage ephemera, palette scraps, old books, and handmade papers can lead you somewhere unexpected, and how layering paper alongside paint creates meaning, texture, and a voice that is unmistakably yours. Whether you are new to collage or ready to go deeper, you will leave with practical tools, a fresh sense of possibility, and permission to let the paper lead.

Amy, beautiful work and warm presentation! Thank you!
Amy, amazing! If you use NOVA gloss medium & varnish, is that not a final varnish? Why do you use a different varnish at the end?
Thanks
Lori
You’re right, Lori, that Nova product is a great final varnish. It does not provide extra UV light protection, though, so if I’m using vintage papers whose color is more likely to fade with UV light exposure, then I’ll go an extra step to protect it.
Thank you Amy. I could watch you paint all day. Your process is so masterful. Loved watching the choices you made and seemed to change them so freely It was like watching your intuitive brain flow in real time. That painting over your left shoulder is terrific too!
Thank You Amy for sharing your process. I absolutely love your work. You are such an inspiration.
This was a fantastic Master Class. It was special the way Amy shared her love of papers and the way and how she uses them. Taking us with her as she created was inspiring. My brother just sent me a large envelope of many different kinds of what I call – suitcase non-stickers. Travel mementos from the 40s, 50s, and 60s – old NYC hotel images, beer labels from India, and hotel stickers from Nepal and other Asian cities. I was going to take them to Artifacts, a store of amazing used items. But now maybe I will try using them in my paintings!
Thank you so much Amy. I am new to collage and it is very satisfying. I have been a scrapbooker since 1997, so I tend to have a “few” papers in my stash. Thanks again for the beautiful demo!
I was interested to see you were painting with a small flat brush. I always use a filbert.. but you got some lovely edges.. I might well get some!..
Really great MC thanks Amy!
Thank you Amy, for a very informative class. I do use collage, but never thought of using tissue paper the way/method that you used in flattening it down by the method of spraying it with water and then using a brayer. It could be just what I have been pondering over .. .. .. .. a certain problematic area in one of my works. I know we are not supposed to be precious over our work, but it (the piece) feels like it is finished, and yet there is this doubt creeping in. Thanks again Amy, love your work.
Wonderful class. Inspirational and insightful. Thank you Amy.
