#115 CRITIQUE – IMAGE ADJUSTMENTS WITH NICK

Apr 15, 2026

In this month’s Critique, we looked at Image Adjustments. Seeing how paintings can be improved is one of the fastest ways to learn how to improve your own work. Nick walked us through his thinking as he showed how images can become stronger.

    • So glad to have had the chance to still watch this. Really wanted yo join the live conversation but sometimes an artists life is forced to make real life its creation .
Going over the principals in this way was just great. Thanks

  2. Thanks, Nick, for sharing your perspective on how to move paintings forward—especially those that are already strong but need that bold, slightly scary next step using the CVP principles. I really appreciated how you sometimes cropped a painting to demonstrate simplification by focusing on just a portion of the original. It’s a valuable lesson, even though cropping can mean starting a new piece, since some of the spontaneity you love in the original is difficult to recreate from a derived segment.

  3. This was fantastic – I think I have learnt so much from watching the critiques. Currently doing CVP for the third time and we are on design at the moment so everything we have been going through came up in this video and really helped to cement what we have just learnt. i play the game of trying to work out what I would do with the picture before Nick tells us and I am definitely getting better at it and generally go along the same lines that Nick showed us. Now of to sort out all of those half finished pictures now I have a much clearer idea on how to do it.

  7. LOVED this! Great reminder to stay focused on what you love. Also a good reminder that differences are far more than color, shape and value. I definitely need to expand that in questions I ask myself as I create! I was especially excited and honored to see my image submission was chosen as part of this presentation. Appreciate Nick’s evaluation and suggestion. Thanks Nick! This may just be the key that will unlock that “thing” I am trying to do with my “sky paintings”.

    • I learn so much from every image adjustment session. It’s one of my favourite parts of being in the Academy, and really helps me move my work forward. Thanks so much for a great discussion. I’ve already watched this twice.
