#103 MARSHALL CROSSMAN

Feb 12, 2025

Imagine working on a series for years! Imagine how much you’d learn about your subject and yourself. This process has stuck with Bay Area painter Marshall Crossman. Her series isn’t just five or ten paintings, but rather 250, in the case of her yearbook series. She continually grows through making multiples. As she becomes more familiar with her subject, it becomes fertile ground for experimentation. Marshall expresses her subjects honestly with every scrape and brushstroke, whether a building, a beachcomber, or a portrait. The emotion is palpable. In conversation with Nicholas, Marshall openly shares her life as an artist and wisdom for those just starting. It’s been a long, focused journey.

  3. What a wonderful interview. I am staggered that galleries have that attitude.. can they not SEE? I stupidly thought they did… that was very illuminating and her advice so good to hear. I absolutely love her work, totally inspiring.. the colours especially her Moroccan Series .. beautiful, I also really resonate with the thumbnails of all the students, so free. Something I am aspiring to become more so. Thanks Nick very much for introducing me to her work – what a lovely woman too.. so calm and warm.

  4. I few great takeaways:
    -“Abstraction through movement”
-“Should be a painting first or at least 50/50 with the subject”
-“I can see where I’m tight”
    Totally relatable!
    Love it. Paint on everyone!

  9. I loved that she said “just paint without the paint operation to see the work.” Her use of colors and figure in water are inspiring.
