Imagine working on a series for years! Imagine how much you’d learn about your subject and yourself. This process has stuck with Bay Area painter Marshall Crossman. Her series isn’t just five or ten paintings, but rather 250, in the case of her yearbook series. She continually grows through making multiples. As she becomes more familiar with her subject, it becomes fertile ground for experimentation. Marshall expresses her subjects honestly with every scrape and brushstroke, whether a building, a beachcomber, or a portrait. The emotion is palpable. In conversation with Nicholas, Marshall openly shares her life as an artist and wisdom for those just starting. It’s been a long, focused journey.

Thoroughly enjoyed Nic’s conversation with Marshall. Thank you so much Marshall for sharing your process. I love the energy you create.
Wish Nick had asked how does Marshall keep the long series work fresh – how does she keep her problem solving approach, fresh. Thoughhts?
This was an interesting and encouraging interview. I am encouraged to follow my own flow and loved hearing not to push for studio. It normalised my pace. Thank you both for sharing. I really appreciate it:)
So interesting! Love the Morocco especially!
Loved this interview so much! It was wonderful to see Marshall’s studio and hear about her painting practice and how she has sustained it over so many years. Great questions by Nick too. Loved her luscious oil paintings too.
